Vocabulary
stumble across/on/upon
Ron Eglash was not looking for a revolution when he stumbled across one.
“stumble across/on/upon” means to discover something by chance, or to meet someone by chance.
Compared to “bump into” which emphasizes on unexpectedly meeting someone who is already known, “stumble across” emphasizes on object or information rather than a person, whilst “encounter” can be used in both cases.
